Indonesian Vice President: Trust to Accountant Important for Nation’s Economy

 

Bandung (9/12) – The important role of professional accountants in Indonesia is very much acknowledged by the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, H.E. H.M. Jusuf Kalla.  In his remarks during opening ceremony of the Regional Public Sector Conference (RPSC) IV and National Accountancy Convention (KNA) VIII, hosted by Ikatan Akuntan Indonesia (Institute of Indonesia Chartered Accountants), on December 8th, 2016 in Bandung, Vice President Kalla highlighted the role of good accountants and the trust that comes with the profession particularly to support the Government’s endeavours in building the nation’s economy. 

 

In this occassion, Vice President Kalla launched the Financial Accounting Standards for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (or Standar Akuntansi Keuangan Entitas Mikro Kecil Menengah – SAK EMKM), accompanied by  Prof Mardiasmo as the President of the National Council of IAI who is also Vice Minister of Finance Republic of Indonesia. Minister of Research and Higher Education, Prof. M. Nasir who is a Member of IAI Advisory,  Council  Vice Chairman of Supreme Audit Agency, Sapto Amal Damandari as Member of IAI Advisory Council , Minister of Natural Enviroment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya, and other high ranking offical were among distinguished VIP guests in the event.  

 

Vice President Kalla’s sentiment was shared by the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia, Sri Mulyani Indrawati during her packed session. Highlighting the key role that accountants can play in supporting the Government’s initiatives, for example the Tax Amnesty program, she encouraged accountants to lead by example and contribute to the success of these initiatives.

 

Supported by the ASEAN Federation of Accountants (AFA) and attended by a number of prominent speakers representing global accountancy profession bodies such as ICAEW, the series of events also brought up a number of key accounting issues such as implementation of accrual basis accounting in the public sector and an outlook to the role of professional accountants in 2025. With the theme of “Professional Accountants Building the Nation”, RPSC IV and  KNA VIII were held as  as part of the Institute’s 59th anniversary. Attended by more than 750 accountants, the series of events commemorate IAI’s continuous contributions to the profession and Indonesia’s ever growing economy.

 

The series of events that commemorated Institute’s 59th anniversary started on December  1st when IAI senior members goes to 76 vocational high schools to inspire young students to be future professional accountants. The events followed on December 3rd, with the IAI-ICAEW CA Scholarship Examination  followed by 2016 students of accounting from various universities from West Java area and on December 5th, the Institute hosted accounting and tax clinic for SME and more than 250 entreprenur used this opportunities to consult various issues related on accounting standard implementation and tax regulations. 

 

Once again, IAI has successfully built the stakeholders’ enthusiasm toward a better accountancy profession in Indonesia.

Ikatan Akuntan Indonesia (Institute of Indonesia Chartered Accountants – IAI) is responsible for the regulation of professional accountants, including setting accounting standards in the private sector, administering the Chartered Accountant (CA) Indonesia exam, providing continuing professional education, establishing a code of ethics, adopting professional standards, and maintaining a disciplinary system for members. IAI membership comprises accountants from all accounting backgrounds, including public accountants/auditors, management accountants, tax accountants, internal auditors, academics and public sector accountants. Prior to 2014, membership in the IAI was voluntary; however, in 2014, the Minister of Finance Decree No. 25 of 2014 on State Registered Accountants introduced the requirement for accountants to become a member of a professional organization prior to their registration with the Minister of Finance.
