Press Release IAI – IFAC – IDX Seminar: Indonesian Accountancy Profession Ready to Face Global Challenges

25 Mei 2025 - Siaran Pers

(Jakarta, May 23, 2025) – Geopolitical tensions, technological disruptions, and the climate crisis have triggered widespread economic turbulence and uncertainty across the globe. Even in Indonesia—currently seen as one of the world’s most stable economies—these effects are being felt across nearly all sectors. In such a volatile environment, the role of accountants becomes increasingly vital and strategic. Accountants are no longer confined to financial recordkeeping and reporting alone; they have emerged as strategic drivers who strengthen economic foundations, ensure accountability, and advance sustainable transformation.

This was among the key themes discussed during an international seminar hosted by the Indonesian Institute of Accountants (IAI) in collaboration with the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). Held at the IDX Main Hall, the seminar, themed The Future of the Accounting Profession and Finance in a Turbulent Era, served as a crucial platform for Indonesian and global accountancy leaders to explore the future of the profession amid global economic volatility, technological disruption, and increasing demands for sustainability reporting. The global seminar drew over 1,800 participants both in-person and virtually, including stakeholders from both the private and public sectors, as well as representatives from Chartered Accountants Worldwide (CAW) and the ASEAN Federation of Accountants (AFA).

This event also marked the official visit of IFAC President Jean Bouquot to Indonesia—the fourth visit by an IFAC President since IAI became a founding member of IFAC in 1977. The presence of the IFAC President symbolizes Indonesia’s strategic role within the global accountancy ecosystem. The visit included a series of joint activities with IFAC, such as a focus group discussion with key stakeholders, a joint delegation audience with Indonesia’s .

Financial Services Authority (OJK), and a visit to Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta to officially open the Aspiring Professional Accountants Festival (IAI APAFest). During the seminar's opening, the IFAC President, IAI President Ardan Adiperdana, and IDX President Director Iman Rachman, were joined by OJK Board of Commissioners Sophia Wattimena and IAI Supervisory Board Chair Prof. Mardiasmo to ceremonially open the stock trading day at the IDX Main Hall.

In his speech, Ardan Adiperdana emphasized the crucial role accountants play in shaping corporate behavior and safeguarding the integrity of the financial system. Through their work in preparing, verifying, and analyzing financial and sustainability reports, accountants contribute to informed decision-making and enhance market trust. The implementation of globally aligned sustainability disclosure standards, such as IFRS S1 and S2, underscores the need for accountants to be competent in climate and sustainability risk reporting.

Meanwhile, IFAC President Jean Bouquot underscored the strategic role of the accounting profession in addressing global economic challenges, particularly in three key areas: sustainability, support for small, and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and public sector financial management. “In each of these three areas, our profession has an essential role to play—and that role becomes even more critical in uncertain times like these,” Bouquot said.

In his address, Bouquot highlighted ethics as the defining quality that distinguishes the accountancy profession from others. “Independence, professional skepticism, and integrity are the core values that define us. These are the principles that have built the public’s trust in our profession and placed us at the heart of economies, financial markets, and organizations,” he stated. Bouquot also reminded attendees that public trust is something that must be continuously earned—it is not to be taken for granted.

Concluding his remarks, Bouquot called for strong partnerships among all stakeholders. “We are part of an ecosystem. Navigating global turbulence requires coordinated collective action across society. Therefore, I call on all partners and stakeholders to rely on the accounting profession and move forward together toward the future,” he concluded.

The IFAC delegation’s visit is especially strategic as IAI is set to host IFAC Connect Asia in December 2025, coinciding with IAI’s 68th anniversary. This global event will mark an important milestone in strengthening cross-border dialogue to create a more resilient, adaptive, and sustainable accounting profession.

In closing, IAI National Council Chair Ardan Adiperdana reaffirmed IAI’s commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders in building a robust, adaptive, and globally competitive accounting profession in the interest of public good and Indonesia’s economic sustainability. “Today’s accountants are agents of change. They help organizations see far beyond the numbers, providing clarity and direction amid uncertainty,” Ardan stated.
